A Military Legend-----Erwin Rommel


In European military, some call him “Fighting Animals”, and some call his armored division “magician”. The British give him the reputation of “The Desert Fox”. Some people even call him “The Hannibal of 20th century”. Erwin Rommel was born of an ordinary scholar family, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, which is also a part of the German Empire. Both his father and grandpa were teachers. Different from Rommel, his mother was born in a family of officials.
Rommel in his childhood was a serious and disciplined student. In the youthful time, he was even a little introvert and became fond of mathematics and mechanical, without any interest on military matters. His dream that time was becoming an engineer or airship specialist. Father is always the one who know his son the best. Rommel’s father encouraged Rommel to join the army, but he didn’t want to. At age 18, Rommel joined the army and then received nine-month training in Royal officers’ training school soon after.
Erwin Rommel has all long adhered to the principle of abstinence, no drinking, and no smoking. Similar with many other militarists, his passion for military affairs was far ahead of the fascination of family life. When World War I broke out, Rommel was just a platoon leader, but he had a willing heart. He was a strong and brave chief and he had ever beaten the attack of around 20 French soldiers leading three men. In 1917, Rommel became a captain. Then in a battle of Carpathian Mountains, he leaded his troops walking along a little known mountain track for 50 hours, and at last they captured 5,000 enemy soldiers and 30 guns. His high spirits for the war and outstanding fighting qualities began to show.
